What it is

Professional whitening uses a stronger bleaching agent than anything available over the counter. Done in the clinic, it lightens the shade of your natural teeth noticeably.

It won’t turn teeth a fake, glowing white. It gives them back the colour they’d have without years of tea, coffee, and food stain — which for most people is a meaningful improvement.

What to expect

We apply a protective layer to your gums first. Then a whitening gel is placed on your teeth. Depending on the system used, a light may be applied to activate it.

The gel sits for a few sessions of 15–20 minutes each, with gel refreshed between sessions. Total time in the chair: about 60–90 minutes.

You’ll see the difference before you leave.

Does it hurt?

Some people feel tooth sensitivity during or after — a brief sharp sensation, especially to cold. It usually fades within 24–48 hours.

If you already have sensitive teeth, tell us before we start. We can adjust the approach.

Whitening doesn’t damage enamel when done correctly. Over-the-counter products used incorrectly are more likely to cause damage than professional treatment.

Honest notes about whitening

  • It only works on natural teeth. Crowns, veneers, and composite fillings don’t whiten. If you have visible restorations, the result will be uneven unless those are also replaced.
  • Results last 1–3 years with normal upkeep. Coffee, tea, and smoking stain teeth back over time.
  • At-home trays (custom trays with a lower-concentration gel) are an alternative — slower, but you control the pace. We can provide these too.
  • This is elective. We won’t push it. If you’re happy with your smile, we’re happy too.

When whitening makes sense

  • Your teeth have yellowed from tea, coffee, or food staining
  • You want a subtle improvement before an event or photo
  • You’ve already addressed any cavities or gum issues (don’t whiten over an unhealthy mouth)

After the visit

For 48 hours after: avoid heavily coloured food and drink (coffee, tea, red wine, turmeric). The enamel is slightly more porous after whitening and picks up stain more easily during this window.

After that: brush normally. Use a toothpaste with fluoride, not abrasive whitening toothpaste which over time damages enamel.
