What it is
A crown is a cap that fits over a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. It’s made from ceramic or metal-ceramic, shaped to match your other teeth.
You need a crown when a tooth is too damaged for a filling alone — after a root canal, when a large portion has broken off, or when a tooth has cracked deeply.
What to expect
Two sittings, about a week apart.
First sitting: We prepare the tooth — filing it down slightly so the crown fits over it. We take an impression (a mould of your teeth), which goes to the lab. A temporary crown goes on the same day so the tooth is protected while the permanent one is being made.
Second sitting: We remove the temporary crown, check the fit and colour of the permanent one, and cement it in place. The whole thing takes 20–30 minutes.
The permanent crown, once in place, is fixed. You don’t remove it. It functions like a natural tooth.
Does it hurt?
The preparation (first sitting) is done under local anaesthetic. You’ll feel the drilling, but not pain.
The temporary crown may feel slightly sensitive — especially to cold. This usually settles down once the permanent crown is in place.
How long it takes
Two visits. First sitting: 45–60 minutes. Second sitting: 20–30 minutes. Typically about a week between them (lab turnaround).
Cost
Starting from ₹3,000 — see full pricing.
The type of crown affects the cost:
- Metal-ceramic: lower end, strong, the back molars sometimes show a metal margin
- Full ceramic: higher end, entirely tooth-coloured, better for front teeth
We’ll recommend what makes sense for which tooth and show you the cost upfront.
When you need this
- After a root canal on a back tooth — the tooth is brittle without the nerve
- A tooth with a large, cracked, or broken section
- A tooth with decay too large for a filling
- An existing crown that has cracked or worn down
After the visit
The permanent crown needs no special care. Brush and floss normally.
Avoid biting very hard things with the crowned tooth (ice, hard candy). The crown is strong, but not indestructible.
Let us know if: the bite feels off, you feel pain, or the gum around the crown becomes swollen.
